About us

Saigon Port has the country’s top productivity and cargo-handling capacity within Vietnam’s maritime industry system.

With a history of over 160 years and remarkable achievements in contributing to the country’s economic development, Saigon Port has been honored with the title of Hero of Labor by the President of Vietnam for its outstanding accomplishments from 1986 to 1995, which played a part in the construction of socialism and the protection of the Fatherland.

Saigon Port operates in many areas, including Ho Chi Minh City, surrounding regions, and the Mekong Delta, with an annual cargo throughput of over 10 million tons. Saigon Port plays an essential role in serving the import-export needs and overall economic development of the entire Southern region of the country.

According to the policies of the State and relevant departments, Saigon Port has received support from various agencies and the community to create favorable conditions for its further development and to maintain its operational role in the region and globally.

With this direction, Saigon Port expects more customer support and cooperation for the common benefits. Customer requirements and feedback are always the driving force for Saigon Port to improve and develop to serve customers better.

  • From the 18th century, many foreign ships engaged in trade activities. .
  • 1835: King Minh Mang issued a decree stating, "Western ships are only allowed to anchor at Da Nang Port, and they are prohibited from trading in other seaports."
  • 1860: A year after capturing Gia Dinh, the French announced the expansion of Saigon Commercial Port.

1863 After the Treaty of Saigon was signed in April 1863 in Hue, Saigon Commercial Port officially operated under the French administration. It became the largest port in Indochina and quickly developed into the 7th busiest port in cargo throughput.

  • On June 5th, at Saigon Commercial Port, the young patriot Nguyen Tat Thanh (later known as President Ho Chi Minh) departed his homeland on Amiral Latouche Tréville in search of a path to save the nation.
  • Following the sentiments and aspirations of the employees, the 2nd Party Congress of Saigon Port in 1980 resolved to designate June 5th as the "Saigon Port Workers' Communication Day" on an annual basis.

  • 1955: After the French colonialists were defeated, the administration of Saigon Commercial Port was transferred to the government of South Vietnam under the name Nha Thuong Saigon Port. .
  • 1975: After the country's unification, Saigon Commercial Port was renamed Saigon Port.
  • 1993: Saigon Port was transformed into a state-owned enterprise.
  • 1996 : Saigon Port was converted into a one-member limited liability company and awarded the title of "Hero of Labor."

  • 2000: The annual cargo-handling capacity was successfully upgraded to 16 million tons.
  • 2009: Saigon Port achieved a record throughput of 14 million tons. The construction of Saigon - Hiep Phuoc Port was initiated.
  • 2010: The joint venture ports in the Ba Ria area operated with 1.800-meter-length of berths capable of receiving vessels up to 165.000 DWT. The handling capacity reached over 3.5 million TEUs per year, with the total investment amounting to 750 million USD.

  • 2015: Saigon Port was converted into a Joint Stock Company up to the present day.
  • 2019: 3 berths of the Saigon - Hiep Phuoc Port area operated with a total length of 800m. Additionally, 2 anchorages could receive vessels with a capacity ranging from 30.000 DWT to 50.000 DWT.
  • 2021: Saigon Port started to research, construct, and propose significant projects to expedite its development and align with its prestigious reputation and inherent potential.

  • 2022: The total volume of cargo exceeded 9 million tons, with consolidated revenue reaching over 1,200 billion VND and consolidated profit reaching over 240 billion VND.
  • 2023: we will focus our efforts and collaborate effectively with partners, agencies, and departments, especially with the Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC), to implement the Saigon International Transshipment Port project in Can Gio on schedule.
