HISTORICAL MILESTONES
With a proud legacy spanning over 160 years, Saigon Port has served as a cornerstone of Vietnam’s economic development. In recognition of our exceptional operational achievements and pivotal role during the transformative period of 1986–1995, Saigon Port was deeply honored to receive the prestigious “Hero of Labor” title from the President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. This distinguished accolade stands as a lasting testament to our unwavering dedication to nation-building and the enduring prosperity of our homeland.
- 18th Century: Foreign merchant vessels actively engaged in regional maritime trade.
- 1835: Emperor Minh Mang issued a royal decree stating: "Western ships are only allowed to anchor at Da Nang Port, and they are prohibited from commercial trading in other seaports."…”
- 1860: One year after the capture of Gia Dinh, the French administration announced the strategic expansion of the Saigon Commercial Port.
- June 5, 1911: From the wharves of Saigon Commercial Port, the young patriot Nguyen Tat Thanh (later known as President Ho Chi Minh) departed his homeland aboard the Amiral Latouche-Tréville, embarking on his historic journey to seek national salvation.
- Legacy: In honor of this momentous event and the collective aspirations of our workforce, the 2nd Party Congress of Saigon Port (1980) officially designated June 5th as the annual "Saigon Port Workers' Traditional Day."
- 1955: Following the end of French colonial rule, the administration of Saigon Commercial Port was transferred to the South Vietnamese government and renamed the Saigon Commercial Port Authority (Nha Thương cảng Sài Gòn).
- 1975: Upon national reunification, the facility was officially renamed Saigon Port.
- 1993: Saigon Port was restructured into a state-owned enterprise.
- 1996: Saigon Port transitioned into a one-member limited liability company. In recognition of its outstanding operational achievements, the port was honored with the prestigious "Hero of Labor" title by the State.
- 2000: Annual cargo-handling capacity was successfully upgraded to accommodate 16 million tons..
- 2009: Saigon Port achieved a record-breaking actual throughput of 14 million tons. Simultaneously, construction commenced on the strategic Saigon - Hiep Phuoc Port project.
- 2010: Joint venture deep-water ports in the Ba Ria - Vung Tau region officially commenced operations. Featuring 1,800 meters of total berth length, these facilities are capable of accommodating mega-vessels up to 165,000 DWT. Total cargo handling capacity surpassed 3.5 million TEUs annually, backed by a monumental total investment of USD 750 million..
- 2015: Saigon Port officially transitioned into a Joint Stock Company, adopting a modern corporate governance model that continues to present day.
- 2019: The Saigon - Hiep Phuoc Port terminal expanded operations, featuring 3 operational berths with a total length of 800 meters. Additionally, 2 anchorages were established to accommodate vessels ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 DWT.
- 2021: Saigon Port initiated strategic research and development for major infrastructure projects, aiming to accelerate growth and maximize our inherent maritime potential.
- 2022: Total cargo throughput exceeded 9 million tons. The company achieved strong financial performance, with consolidated revenue surpassing VND 1,200 billion and consolidated profit exceeding VND 240 billion.
- 2023 - Present: Saigon Port is strategically focusing its resources and collaborating closely with key partners and government agencies—particularly the Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC)—to drive the timely implementation of the monumental Can Gio International Transshipment Port project.
