HCMC – More than 50,000 sea-going vessels passed through Vietnam’s ports in the first half of 2024, a 4% increase over the same period last year, according to data from the Vietnam Maritime Administration.

The number of foreign vessel arrivals reached nearly 24,000, a 9% rise from the previous year, while domestic vessel arrivals slightly decreased to about 26,500, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

International vessel entries and exits increased by 18%, totaling around 3,560 trips. However, domestic route trips saw a 3% decline, with 22,968 trips recorded.

The number of domestic vehicles passing through ports grew by 12%, reaching nearly 186,000, with registered river-sea compatible ships (VR-SB) accounting for 28,689 trips, up 12%.

The administration attributed the increase in vessel traffic to a rise in cargo volumes. Over 426 million tons of goods were processed through ports, reflecting an 18% increase. Of this, sea transport handled 296 million tons, while inland waterways carried over 130 million tons.

The international passenger market also showed growth, with over 4.3 million passengers recorded. International passengers made up 564,400 of this total, primarily on mainland-to-island routes, constituting 90% of the total passenger traffic.
