Saigon Port – The perfect stopover for voyages

  • General News
  • 17/01/2025

As the closing days of the old year draw to an end, the bustling anticipation of welcoming the New Year 2025 permeates everywhere. This is the moment for us to reflect deeply on the path we have experienced, treasure the memories and challenges we have overcome. Simultaneously, it is the time to look forward with a ready mindset and steadfast resolve.

Amid the bustling atmosphere of the early days of the new year, Saigon Port has become the center of attention, welcoming three consecutive large-capacity international cruise ships. This is not only a significant event for the maritime transport sector but also an opportunity for Ho Chi Minh City to showcase its dynamic, modern image and rich cultural identity to the international community. These ships, carrying hundreds of tourists from around the globe, have added vibrancy to the landscape of trade and tourism at one of the largest seaports in southern Vietnam.

On January 11th, 2025, Silver Whisper – a symbol of luxury and sophistication at sea – became the first of three cruise ships to dock at Saigon Port. With the length of 182 meters, the ship carried over 600 passengers and crew on a 124-day voyage through 28 countries, from the United States to New Zealand. As a masterpiece of the luxury cruise line Silversea, Silver Whisper is designed as a five-star hotel on water, featuring spacious suites with private balconies and exquisite interiors for maximum comfort. The ship also offers a host of modern amenities, including fine dining restaurants with diverse menus, sophisticated bars, an outdoor swimming pool and a tranquil spa with professional wellness treatments. After a three-day exploration of Ho Chi Minh City’s attractions, the ship will set sail for Chan May Port in Hue City, continuing its journey to discover the stunning charm of Vietnam’s coastal regions.

At the same time in early 2024, after a prolonged period of challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, which deeply impacted the tourism and maritime industries, the return of the Seabourn Encore to Saigon Port became a bullish signal, heralding the robust recovery of the cruise tourism sector. In early 2025, Saigon Port once again warmly welcomed the Seabourn Encore, carrying over 600 passengers from various nations on an extraordinary journey through Southeast Asia. This luxury ship features 12 decks with 300 opulent suites, Michelin-standard restaurants, a tranquil spa and a variety of unique entertainment options. During their two-day stay in Ho Chi Minh City, passengers have the opportunity to explore the Mekong Delta, the Cu Chi Tunnels, shop at Ben Thanh Market, … The Seabourn Encore not only offers travelers an enriching experience of Vietnamese culture but also marks a promising beginning for the revival of the cruise tourism industry at Saigon Port.

The third ship to dock at Saigon Port on January 12th was the World Odyssey, also known by its alternate name, Deutschland. Launched in 1998, the vessel is uniquely designed in the style of the 1920s. The World Odyssey is among the world’s most distinctive ships, serving a dual purpose: from September to April next year, it transports students participating in the “Semester at Sea” program, while for the remainder of the year, it is chartered by Germany’s Phoenix Reisen travel company. Unlike the other two cruise ships, more than 700 students aboard the World Odyssey will have nearly a week to immerse themselves in the rich history, culture, and hospitality of Ho Chi Minh City specifically, as well as the Mekong Delta region more broadly. On January 18th, the ship will depart, continuing its journey to the next destination in Penang, Malaysia, offering the students yet another cultural experience.

The return of international cruise ships to Saigon Port signifies not only the recovery of the tourism sector but also underscores the port’s role as a vital gateway connecting Ho Chi Minh City to the world. These voyages breathe new life into the port while reaffirming its status as a preferred destination in the exploration of Southeast Asia in particular and Asia as a whole.
